Depression-me and you in it together

Yesterday evening I spoke at an event staged by KPMG and Citibank called “Lifting the Lid on Depression”, telling my personal story. At the end of a difficult emotional week for me, I don’t have the strength to write about the event today and do it full justice. I will leave that until another day when I have had time to recuperate and feel a little stronger.

What I did want to say briefly however is that today I have received lots of emails congratulating me on my “bravery”, and thanking me for being so open and honest about my experiences. In almost every case, that person had previously felt very alone but the event helped them to realise that this is not the case.

If nothing else, the event has triumphed by bringing people together. Sharing their experiences of depression and low mood. Helping them to understand that they are not freaks. Showing them that they can get help.

But most importantly in their fight telling them that they are not alone. You are not alone. I am not alone. All you have to do is reach out and ask for help.

It will arrive.

You’ll never walk alone….what an anthem

When you walk through the storm
Hold your head up high
And don’t be afraid of the dark
At the end of the storm
There’s a golden sky
And the sweet silver song of the lark

Walk on, through the wind
Walk on, through the rain
Though your dreams be tossed and blown
Walk on, walk on, with hope in your heart
And you’ll never walk alone
You’ll never walk alone

Walk on, walk on, with hope in your heart
And you’ll never walk alone
You’ll never walk alone
